Christmas History

The word Christmas means "Mass of Christ". Its history dates back over 4000 years. Christmas was originally called Yule in England which meant mid-winter. However when the Saxons were converted to Christianity the word Yule came to mean Jesus' birthday.

Christmas Day is celebrated by Christians as the birthday of Jesus, the lord or a spiritual leader of Christians. It is celebrated on 25th of December every year and since 1870 this day has been observed as holiday in U.S. Traditions say that it has been celebrated since the year 98 AD.

There is also a tradition in Great Britain, i.e. "Boxing Day". On this day, churches open these boxes containing alms for the poor and these alms are distributed to the poor. A lot of customs are followed on this day like exchanging of gifts, Christmas cards, paper decorations, decoration of Christmas trees, attending prayers at church, family get together and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus with is white beard and red costume to arrive. These traditions began with the Mesopotamian celebration of New Years. On the day of Christmas,Public places are decorated with flowers, gifts and candles and Christmas trees and is celebrated with great enthusiasm.

2.Christmas crackers were first made in 1847 by a confectioner named Tom Smith.
3.Christmas tree lights were invented in 1882.
4.Christmas trees were used in central Europe from the Middle Ages.
5.Christmas Carols were originated in Great Britain and were written in the 19th century.
6.America’s first recipe for Christmas cakes dates back to 1796.
